Given this new information, we want to hear YOUR theories! What are Harry and Voldemort reaching for? Where are their wands? Will their final showdown be a no-holds-barred Quidditch match? (Heeh! Nice one, Erica!) What is the necklace around Harry's neck? Is it Slytherin's locket? Who -- or what -- are those shadowy figures in the background? And just where are they, anyway?
The UK cover is quite different, and reminds us more of Smaug's lair in The Hobbit than of anything we've yet encountered in J.K. Rowling's wizarding world. What are they coming out of? A portal, perhaps? An aqueduct? Are they falling out or being sucked in? Could this be the Room of Requirement again? Or is it a vault in Gringotts? Is there a Horcrux hidden amongst all those jewels? Five points to anyone who spots the hidden Dobby!
Many have speculated that, given the tragic events of Book 6, Hogwarts would finally be closed forever. The back of the UK version shows us Hogwarts being encroached upon by a thick, dark fog -- which makes me wonder if the students may be returning to Hogwarts for year seven after all, despite the evil that threatens to take over. Ms. Kat wonders if the sphere with the serpent in it is another prophecy. Will Professor Trelawney have another vision? I wonder if James will make a final appearance in his stag form as Harry's Patronus (perhaps coming to Harry's aid in a time of need?), or if the fully-formed Patronus pictured above is representative of Harry finally reaching his true full potential as a wizard. What do you think??
I'm sure that this week's Mugglecast will be chock-full of theories and musings about these covers, so all you podcasters out there should have a listen!

After reading the predictions about the cover from Miss Kat and others, I have to wonder...What if the curtains on the back of the book is the veil that is seen in the ministry of magic. I have this question because of the appearance of both Harry's and Voldie's hands. If this is the case it will raise the question is there more than one veil because it appears that the veil isn't in the ministry. Another observation/question I have is whether or not the sphere with the snakes in it is not tied to a horcrux dealing maybe with Nagini
Elizabeth
Nice theory. I like the curtains possibly being connected to the veil. And MAYBE the last Horcrux is a Golden Snitch, so that's why the final duel-to-the-death, with Good vs. Evil, Harry vs. Voldy, Gryffindor vs. Slytherin, is a quidditch smackdown :) Hey it could totally happen!
Also, notice how beat up and bleeding the trio are in the UK cover?
~Ms. Erica
Is that the Whomping Willow?? Is it dead?? Is this like the White Tree of Gondor -- will it spring back to life when Dumbledore returns???
Ooh, somebody pointed out that the fog could be smoke, like the Forbidden Forest is on fire! Plus there is a full moon--does that mean the werewolves will play a role?
Also the armor on the UK cover seems to have a dragon on the helmet and a snake on the breastplate...
Ron has a really goofy look on his face though :D
The UK cover reminds me of the old UK covers of Terry Pratchett books, same style and everything. The US cover I think makes him look a lot more like Daniel Radcliffe, and with good reason I guess.
Course by the time book 7 is a movie Radcliffe will be greying and going through a midlife crisis :)
If you blow up the English cover you can see a reflection in Harry's glasses. Could it be a clue?
ooh what's reflected in his glasses? now we're playing the "play-the-song-backwards-it-says-paul's-dead" beatles album game, aren't we! :D
and dobby is holding gryffindor's sword, and is perched behind harry, on his back, if i'm not mistaken. but what if it's kreacher? dobby seems more likely to be holding gryffindor's sword, though, since he's definitely more loyal.
