Poetry Contest guidelines

April is National Poetry Month,
and we need YOU to help us celebrate!

Just enter our haiku contest.

The winning poem and poet will be
on display in the
Children's Department
during National Poetry Month.

Here are the contest rules:

1. Write an original haiku.

A haiku is a poem with three lines.
The first line has 5 syllables.
The second line has 7 syllables.
The third line has 5 syllables.
The lines don't usually rhyme.

Visit this page for some help
and some great examples.

Feel free to illustrate it!

2. Turn in your haiku to
the Children's Department.

You can write it down and
bring it to the Children's Desk,

or

you can type it up and e-mail it to

Make sure you include your name,
age, and phone number with the poem.

We will be posting entries on this blog
before we choose a winner.

3. The deadline is March 28.

We will select a winner on April 1,
the first day of
National Poetry Month.

You must be in 6th grade or younger to enter.
You can enter as many poems as you want.
